Lent, the period of 40 days that precedes the celebration of Easter is here again. For most Catholics, the first thought that Lent brings to mind is giving something up. They choose to sacrifice something during this season. It could be something you enjoy, a bad habit or a cherished activity.
You cannot give up something you do not like as it is not a sacrifice at all.
The notion of giving up something during Lent is very much in keeping with the penitential character of the season.
Giving something you love can be very difficult.
This year’s lent started on March 1, which was Ash Wednesday and most Catholics have already made up their mind what they want to give up.
1. Ponzi schemes
Various Ponzi schemes have been trending in Nigeria. People have not learnt their lesson from the fall of the most popular one, MMM Nigeria. This year’s Lent will be a good time for you to give up investing in Ponzi schemes which promise heaven and earth.
This one will not be easy for the ladies that live, eat and drink Telemundo.
Maybe from now until Easter you can just…let it go. Yes you can. Read your bible and pray instead.
This would be a good time to take a break from shopping. Don’t buy anything besides the essentials during Lent. You will be surprised at how much you will be saving.
Nigerians have been complaining and lamenting about the economic recession. What have you achieved with all the complaining? May be it is time to stop complaining and channel that energy into something more productive.
Try to have a positive outlook on things.
Why worry, when you can pray? Worrying about tomorrow can steal today’s joy.
Give up gossiping. Stop spreading negative things about people. If someone comes to tell you something negative about another person, let the person know you are not interested.
Devote some of the time you would spend watching movies to praying and reading scriptures. You will have plenty of time to watch it later.
10. Checking your phone every 2 minutes
You might want to turn your cell phone off for a few hours each day and not let it distract you during this season.
11. All Social Media
Say goodbye to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest and others. You don’t want to get drawn into those pointless arguments.
12. Jumping queues
It is okay to join the queue. You do not have to be in a hurry all the time.
13. Big brother Nigeria
It might be difficult especially if you are already hooked and follow it every minute of the day. Why not use that time to pray and read some scripture verses.
14. Your Friday night plans
Take a break from clubbing, hanging out with the boys and just go home and spend time with God.
It will be all the more worth it at the end of Lent, knowing you survived without something you thought you couldn’t live without.
